Chinese takes away Ivanovic's winning chance in upset shock

Chinese takes away Ivanovic's winning chance in upset shockLondon  - Zheng Jie gave China a taste of possible Olympic success with her shock 6-1, 6-4 elimination of world number one Ana Ivanovic on Friday in the third round at Wimbledon.

The number 133 in singles who won the Wimbledon doubles crown with compatriot Yan Zi in 2006, stunned the Serb less than three weeks after the top seed won the French Open.

The 17 unforced errors from Ivanovic left her heading home 24 hours after number 154 Alla Kudryavtseva upset third seed and 2004 champion Maria Sharapova.

The Ivanovic exit depleted the Serbian ranks after Novak Djokovic's second-round loss on the men's side.

Jie, injured for much of last year and playing Wimbledon on a wild card, broke four times as she dominated against the seed.

"This is a surprise for me," said the stunned winner, married to her coach. "She's number one so I just tried my best.

"I told myself to keep going, keep going. This was a tough match, she has a good serve and big forehand, so I tried to keep to her backhand more."

Ivanovic had won their only other match two years ago in Montreal. (dpa)
