Cairo - Many Egyptians took to the streets right after Thursday's sensational 1-0 victory against world champions Italy in a Confederations Cup match, beeping their car horns loudly at midnight.
Streets became crowded after traffic was light during the match. In some areas, young men were seen hanging from the windows of moving cars, cheering and waving Egyptian flags.
Celebratory music blared from coffee shops where fans gathered to watch the match, which was played in Johannesburg.
After important victories, Egyptians regularly congregate in the streets to celebrate, dance and cheer the national team. Main streets were blocked for hours after Egypt won the African Cup of nations in 2006 and 2008.
Besides celebrating their upset of the defending world champions on Thursday, Egyptians were celebrating their national team's victory after disappointing matches against Brazil and Algeria.
Brazil defeated the Pharaohs 4-3 in their opening match in the confederation cup, while Algeria won 3-1 in a World Cup qualifying match. (dpa)
