Asian gold medallist Pinki Pramanik gets bail

Kolkata, July 10 : In a major sigh of relief for Asian Games gold medallist athlete Pinki Pramanik, a district court in North 24 Parganas today granted bail to her in connection with a rape case.
Pinki, who has been accused of being a male and raping her former partner, was in judicial custody.
According to reports, Pinki''s chromosome pattern test report to determine her gender was received yesterday, but her gender could not be determined at the state-run hospital, as the facility for the chromosome pattern test was unavailable.
The Calcutta High Court had earlier ordered a probe into the alleged violation of Pinki''s rights.
The court had also asked the government to file an affidavit against the allegations of rights violation within two weeks.
Pinki was allegedly kept with male inmates in a Kolkata prison. Moreover, male police personnel were seen accompanying her while she was being taken to hospital for medical tests.
A 29-second MMS showing the athlete completely naked went viral on the Internet. This video is of Pinki undergoing a gender verification test at a private nursing home after she was arrested on June 14, 2012.
The West Bengal Human Rights Commission (WBHRC) had also issued a notice to the state police for insensitively handling Pinki''s case. (ANI)
