Fernando AlonsoArdennes (Belgium), Aug 27 : Ferrari's Fernando Alonso set the fastest time in a rain-affected opening practice session ahead of Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix.

Alonso, fifth in the drivers' standings but only 20 points behind leader Mark Webber, clocked a best lap of two minutes 00.727 seconds in the closing stages of the 90-minute run.

That time was 0.770secs ahead of McLaren's Lewis Hamilton.

Renault's Robert Kubica put in a solid run towards the end to finish with the third best time of 2:02.081.
