Protesting farmers in Greece give up key bridge blockade

Protesting farmers in Greece give up key bridge blockade Athens - Farmers protesting falling commodity prices ended their blockade of the bridge over the Isthmus of Corinth overnight, restoring one of Greece's most important road links.

The blockade was lifted ahead of a decision expected at midday Wednesday by farmers unions on whether to continue the road blockades, Greek media reported.

Scores of farmers used their tractors beginning Monday to block the Isthmus of Corinth, which connects the Peloponnese peninsula with Athens and the rest of Greece.

The protests entered their 10th day Wednesday as farmers demanded tax rebates and subsidies from the government in the wake of falling prices for their goods and sinking EU subsidies. They estimated that they had lost one-quarter of their income in the past 10 years.

The conservative government has offered an aid package totalling 500 million euros (650 million dollars) and has said it would not offer more.

In the past week and a half, the farmers have cut access to major highways and blocked border crossings with Bulgaria and Turkey, slicing the country in half and paralysing freight traffic at the borders. Shortages were seen at supermarkets, and the country's main social security fund, IKA, said it was running low on vital medication. (dpa)
