Especially hard hit was the Aegean island of Euboea, where several villages around the city of Kymi were flooded, leaving hundreds of houses and several camping places underwater.

"In one case we had to use a helicopter to rescue a Swedish tourist," said local prefect, Giannis Floros, in a radio interview.

The one fatality was a 40-year-old police officer whose vehicle was taken in a mass of water. (dpa)
