32 More US Hospitals to Settle Allegations over False Spinal Fracture Treatment
More than two dozen hospitals in the US will pay approximately $28 million in order to settle claims that they mischarged Medicate, officials at the United States Department of Justice announced Friday.
The Justice Department said the 32 hospitals located in 15 US states billed false claims to Medicare for a spinal fracture treatment, called kyphoplasty. “The guilty hospitals frequently submitted false bills to Medicare for inpatient stays following a procedure known as kyphoplasty, a treatment for certain spinal fractures caused by osteoporosis”, the department explained.
The hospitals that have agreed to pay some of the largest penalties in the settlement are Martin Memorial Medical Center in Stuart, Citrus Memorial Health System in Inverness and the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. These will pay more than $1.5 million to settle allegations.
A spokesman of Martin Memorial Medical Center tried to defend the medical facility. The hospital followed the medical procedures in a way that it thought to be one of the best for patients, the spokesman said in a statement.
A spokeswoman of Ohio-based Cleveland Clinic also released a statement where she said that the hospital conducted the procedures that were medically necessary for patients. Spokesperson of other hospitals didn’t speak anything on the matter.
With new list of guilty hospitals, the department of justice has reached settlement with over 130 US hospitals. These medical facilities will pay about $105 million to settle allegations that they submitted false claims to Medicare for a type of spinal fracture procedure.
