Chemical Leak at Hydrite Chemical Co. sends 15 Individuals to Hospital
A chemical leakage has been reported at a plant on the south side of Terre Haute. According to authorities, before the leakage stopped, it sent about 15 individuals to a hospital.
While providing more information on the incident that took place on Saturday night, firefighters said that it was sulfur dioxide that leaked at Hydrite Chemical Co. Due to winds, the fumes reached to Hulman-Mini Speedway, where a number of people had gathered to witness auto races, the firefighters added.
As per reports of the Tribune-Star, after the chemical leakage, more than 200 individuals were evacuated from the place. A number of other individuals reported about respiratory problems. The people complained about difficulty while breathing and metallic taste, the reports stated.
Caitlyn Chandler, an individual who said his brother also experienced problems due to the chemical leakage, said that his brother was treated for chest pain and nausea. He said the victims felt like throat got real tight.
Police reported about evacuations on Saturday night and did not inform about any evacuations on the next day (Sunday). According to reports, at the scene, some individuals who had problems were also given oxygen.
Ann Marie Foote, spokeswoman of the Terre Haute Regional Hospital, said, “The hospital received 15 patients complaining of symptoms related to the leak. Twelve were treated and released, and three were admitted for additional testing and treatment”.
Joe Swan, spokesman of Terre Haute Fire Department, said that the situation was under control by 10 pm on Saturday.
