According to reports, Gov. Andrew Cuomo is looking forward to regulations for cooling towers throughout the state after outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in the Bronx led to death of 10 people. The governor said he is looking forward to a registry of cooling towers in addition to regulations that require building owners to check their towers and treat them with particular chemicals.

Cuomo assured that he will have reforms for a system throughout the state that leads to changes.

He said, “I want to make sure we have a statewide system, statewide protocols. We know where the cooling towers are, we know they're inspected, we set up a protocol for how often they're inspected because obviously leaving it to the authorities and the owners hasn't worked".

There are no state laws in relation to cooling tower inspections for any kind of building. When the state's legislative information website was searched for laws, there were only a few mentions of cooling towers in different statutes, however none was linked to inspections.

As per Cuomo, some municipalities need registries of cooling towers, whereas there is no such need in New York City.

Cuomo's came up with the statements following the state set up teams to the South Bronx so as to help with examination of cooling towers over there. Also, local health commissioners of the state, together with Albany County Health Commissioner Elizabeth Whalen, met state and New York City health officials in order to talk about dealing with the outbreak.
