Future belongs to ‘country with grains not guns’, says Swaminathan
Renowned agricultural scientist M. S. Swaminathan has said on Monday that the there is a need to increase efforts by the scientific community in order to provide solutions to the issue in the areas of food, nutrition and water.
Swaminathan added that the revolution is possible in agriculture designed at improving productivity without harming the environment or the society. He noted that India has made substantial progress from receiving food aid to becoming a country that is planning to guarantee food for all with home grown grains.
"The future in my view belongs to the country with grains not guns," he said. He was speaking to delegates at the valedictory session of 100th Indian Science Congress.
Speaking on the issue of prices of fertilizers, he said that the usage of fertilizers in the country is about 48 per cent efficient and the efficiency can be improved to 90 per cent through scientific methods. He pointed out that the production from one kilogram of urea can be doubled with the help of new scientific processes.
While speaking in West Bengal, he also noted that the states of West Bengal, Bihar and Assam have the potential to become agricultural giants in the country.
