The non-cellular arm of the state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has recently filed a loss of 4,963 crore. The non-cellular business mainly constitutes of its fixed line and broadband line of business.
However, the company even after suffering huge losses from its landline business managed to stay in black by registering a profit of Rs. 575 crore in the last fiscal year i. e. 2008-09 riding on the back of the interest which came from its cash reserves. The company filed revenue of Rs. 35,811.9 crore in that fiscal though, the profit fell by 81% and the top-line by 6% wherein the interest cost was amounting to Rs. 3,900 crore.
Notably, company's income from the non-telecom activities in that fiscal was over Rs. 5,000 crore. In fact, the company also gets a Rs. 2,000 crore on an annual basis as a part of the universal obligation fund. Considering that the last two mentioned incomes weren't there, the losses would have climbed to Rs. 7,000 crore.
Recently the committee headed by Sam Pitroda has submitted an action plan to the Prime Minister with a view to get this loss-making PSU back on track.
