French give Sarkozy low grades on handling of crisis

French give Sarkozy low grades on handling of crisis Paris  - Although he has been typically hyperactive in his efforts to limit the effects of the economic crisis, French President Nicolas Sarkozy has not convinced the French people that his policies are working, according to a poll published Monday in the daily Liberation.

According to the survey, 58 per cent of French adults judge the results of Sarkozy's efforts as "negative," versus only 40 per cent who said they were "positive."

In addition, nearly two of three respondents said that the government's economic stimulus plan was not efficient.

The poll also found that, despite Sarkozy's vow to help establish a new form of capitalism, most of the French believe that nothing has changed in that regard.

For example, 77 per cent of those contacted said that capitalism was not better regulated than before the crisis, and 70 per cent denied that the bonuses of executives have been put under control.

Significantly, more than nine out of 10 French adults said they feared that "a similar crisis can occur again."

The survey was carried out on September 3 and 4 by the Viavoice institute using a representative sample of 1,006 people 18 years of age and older. (dpa)
