Construction pillar collapses in India

Construction pillar collapses in IndiaNew Delhi - A 50-foot pillar used in the construction of a metro line in India's financial hub of Mumbai collapsed Tuesday but there were no injuries, a news report said.

The pillar crashed in the busy Saki Naka area but there were no casualties because the accident occurred past midnight, the NDTV network reported.

The incident came two days after a rail bridge at a construction site in New Delhi crashed, leaving six people dead.

Six more people were injured at the same site Monday, when construction cranes clearing the debris tumbled to the ground.

Engineers said the pillar in Mumbai may have toppled due to gusty winds during a storm.

Water-logging due to incessant rain weakened the base of the pillar and strong winds then caused the entire structure to come crashing down, the report said.

Officials said local agencies worked through the night to clear the debris that could have caused traffic chaos in the area, since Saki Naka is one of the busiest areas in the metropolis. (dpa)
