Eating disorders unit to be established in Auckland
Better government funding is being welcomed by the Mental Health Foundation for the treatment of people with eating disorders.
With establishment and development of residential services in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch; an extra $6.5 million per year will be spent on eating disorder services.
Judi Clements, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation said, "Eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia are potentially life-threatening," says Judi Clements, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation." "We are very pleased that fewer people being treated for these disorders will be taken away from their communities to facilities in Australia."
It should be mentioned that care needed for people who experience the eating disorders is complicated and the Foundation supports the increased funding to be utilized to make sure that services are well integrated.
Eating disorder's mortality rate is high, which might be from physical stresses such as malnutrition; or death by suicide as a result of severe depression. However, recovery is possible.
