Netflix in talks with Chinese companies for partnership to enter the online video market

According to reports, Netflix is having discussions with a Chinese media company along with some other companies as it wants to enter the online video market in China. According to people who didn’t want to be named, Netflix talked to companies including Wasu Media Holding in relation to forming a partnership.

When asked about a possible China partnership, a spokeswoman, Anne Marie Squeo said that by the end of 2016, Netflix is looking forward to become almost global.

The broadcaster of ‘House of Cards’ and ‘Orange Is the New Black’ would be benefited by forecasted explosive growth in online television, if it manages to enter China. According to Shanghai- based Internet consultant IResearch, it is expected that by 2018, the market would nearly triple to 90 billion yuan ($18 billion).

The company’s series like the House of Cards could be scrutinized by Chinese censors, before it is permitted to air. According to Bloomberg, it is necessary for Netflix to have a local partnership, considering the Chinese government's tough rules on licensing for online content. According to reports, the company requires a partner having licenses for content on all devices, such as computers, mobile phones and set-top boxes.

Seven companies have been given Internet TV licenses by China's State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television. These companies also include Wasu.

According to Chief Content Office Ted Sarandos, “Netflix intends to try to figure out China and how to get there. We're open to all different models to get there eventually, because we want to be fully global. And it's a pretty big chunk of the world to have an asterisk". He added that the company has no plans to enter China without a partner.
