Kuala Lumpur  - A Malaysian police officer has been charged with raping and robbing an Indonesian maid two years ago, a news report said Thursday.

The 32-year-old suspect was alleged to have used his position as a police officer to extort 500 ringgit (135 dollars) from the alleged victim, before raping her twice at a hotel in the southern state of Negeri Sembilan, the New Straits Times daily said.

The officer had earlier detained the 28-year-old Indonesian woman for having an expired work permit, said the report.

Malaysia is home to more than 320,000 foreign domestic workers, out of which some 85 per cent are from neighbouring Indonesia. (dpa)
