Low Algal Concentration is reason behind Lake Tahoe’s blue color
Earlier it was considered that the bright blue color of Lake Tahoe is because of its water clarity, but now it has been unveiled that the color is due to low algae concentration. Many theories are present regarding the crystal clear blue and now the new study has come up with a new reason.
The researchers were able to know the right reason behind the color of the lake by using the data from a research conducted by NASA Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) and an instrument used to capture light. The researchers came to know the lake's trademark blue waters are due to algae.
The lake is so clear that a person could witness 70 feet below in some places. But in the research, the team has kept the blue color and water clarity as two different things. Researchers from the University of California said that they have been able to put a number to the blue.
In the past three years the color of Lake Tahoe has improved. It has happened due to the funds being used for preventing erosion. The researchers found that clarity is controlled by sediments and blueness is controlled by algal concentration.
It shall be noted that the lower the algal concentration, bluer the lake. The researchers have cleared that water's clarity has nothing to do with the lake's blueness. "So nature has shown us what happens if nutrients get into the lake. In that way, Lake Tahoe has shown us what it needs to be blue and clear again", affirmed Dr. Geoffrey Schladow.
