A British study has revealed that pregnancy is safe for breast cancer survivors, but they should wait as long as five years after treatment before becoming pregnant.

The report from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists said that pregnancy may even have a protective effect for breast cancer survivors.

The report presented Thursday at the European Breast Cancer Conference in Barcelona, Spain said that survivors considering pregnancy, however, should wait for as long as five years after treatment, depending on the aggressiveness of their cancer, to allow for assessment of long-term survival from the cancer.

The Times of London reported on Friday that the report analyzed 14 trials in Belgium and Italy conducted between 1970 and last year. It was suggested by the analysis that women who became pregnant after a diagnosis of breast cancer had a 42-percent reduction in the risk of death compared with those who did not become pregnant.
