Icahn receives a lot of criticism from students

Corporate boards, company executives, and rival investors criticized Carl Icahn. But he is receiving a lot of criticism from casino workers and college students, who consider him as a reason behind struggling seaside gambling resort.

Trump Entertainment Resorts will be taken over by Icahn. He’ll also take over the struggling Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort. But even before it occurs, the company’s elimination of health insurance and pensions for workers has led to a lot of public protests.

On Thursday, college students and union members protested over Trump Entertainment's decision of blocking the former Showboat Casino Hotel from being rehabilitated into a campus for Stockton University. The expected reuse of a shuttered casino was a good news for Atlantic City in the last year or so, when four of its 12 casinos, together with the still-profitable Showboat, were closed.

According to Trump Entertainment, a college campus next to the Taj Mahal is not acceptable as students under the legal age of 21 would come to gamble and drink. And because of that casinos pay heavy fines. According to Shannon Herbst, a senior, he wants that Icahn should know that he is doing wrong and it’s about education and future of the students.

University president Herman Saatkamp said that the chances of changing the Showboat into a campus were ‘looking positive’. He said so after a meeting with school trustees on Wednesday night.

Icahn is also the owner of Atlantic City's Tropicana Casino and Resort and has been into a dispute with the main casino workers' union, Unite Here Local 54, over work-rule changes benefit cuts at the bankrupt Taj Mahal.
