Hamburg down Stuttgart to stay top of Bundesliga

Hamburg  - SV Hamburg defeated VfB Stuttgart 3-1 to go back above Bayer Leverkusen at the top of the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Leverkusen had gone top after a 3-2 win at champions Wolfsburg in the afternoon but goals from Mladen Petric, Eljero Elia and Ze Roberto helped Hamburg reclaim the leading spot after the later kick-off.

Both teams have 13 points but Hamburg have a slighty superior goal difference.

Petric opened the scoring on the half hour after combining well with Elia outside the area before striking a left foot shot over the diving Jens Lehmann in goal.

Lehmann was again left helpless when Dutch international Elia had time to turn and strike the ball from 25 metres into the bottom left-hand corner in the 59th minute.

Stuttgart immediately hit back when Russia striker Pavel Pogrebnyak slotted the ball home from a narrow angle three minutes later, but Hamburg made sure of the points when Ze Roberto struck from the edge of the area just into stoppage time.

Two players were dismissed as visiting Bayer Leverkusen sent champions Wolfsburg crashing to a 3-2, while Bayern Munich came from behind at Borussia Dortmund for a 5-1 victory to move fourth, a point behind unbeaten Eintracht Frankfurt who were 2-0 winners in Freiburg.

Two goals from Simon Rolfes, the second a penalty, punished Wolfsburg after goalkeeper Diego Benaglio was sent off in the 33rd minute.

Benaglio was shown a red card for jumping into a challenge on Swiss compatriot Eren Derdiyok outside the area. However television pictures showed the keeper made contact with the ball.

"The referee should never ever have shown a red card," Wolfsburg coach Armin Veh said.

"He (Derdiyok) even told the referee he wasn't touched."

Derdiyok was himself dismissed for a second booking eight minutes after the break but Stefan Kiessling made it three shortly afterwards.

A 77th-minute free-kick from Zvjezdan Misomovic and a Grafite penalty three minutes later put Wolfsburg back in the game but the visitors held out to inflict a third successive defeat on Veh's side.

Mario Gomez, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Franck Ribery and a late double from Thomas Mueller gave Bayern a 5-1 win at Dortmund.

Bayern are level on eight points with Hoffenheim who enjoyed a 3-0 defeat of VfL Bochum with goals from Demba Ba, Chinedu Obasi and Marvin Compper.

Elsewhere, Nuremberg won for the first time this season with a 1-0 victory over Borussia Moenchengladbach, while Mainz came from behind to beat visiting Hertha Berlin 2-1, who could drop to last if Cologne defeat Schalke at home on Sunday.

The biggest crowd of the day - a capacity 80,552 - was in Dortmund to see the home side go in front against Bayern through a Mats Hummels header in the 10th minute.

But Gomez headed Bayern level in the 36th and Schweinsteiger put the visitors ahead from 20 metres five minutes after the break.

Winger Arjen Robben started for the first time since his move from Real Madrid, but Ribery again took a place on the bench.

The Frenchman came on for the second half to make it three in the 65th with a free-kick into the top corner of the net before running to the touchline to embrace coach Louis van Gaal, appearing to give the surprised Dutchman a kiss on the neck.

"It was difficult to keep on my feet," van Gaal told Sky television.

Ribery had reportedly been critical of his relationship with van Gaal but the coach said he and Ribery were "always good friends" and praised the midfielder's impact on the game.

"He prepared the second and the third was also a very nice goal," he added. "I do everything for my players, whatever is best for them."

Mueller, another second-half substitute, wrapped up a convincing victory for Bayern with goals in the 78th and 88th minute.

In Sunday's remaining match, Werder Bremen could leap to at least third place with victory over visiting Hanover. (dpa)
