GST not to be applied from April 1, 2011

GST not to be applied from April 1, 2011It's official now. The much awaited new regime of indirect tax, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) will in most probability not be applied from April 1, 2010.

Talking to the PTI, a senior government official made this announcement. Revenue Secretary Sunil Mitras said that looking at the current situation GST will surely miss the deadline.

GST is a new tax form which was suppose to replace excise duty, service tax on the Centre's end and VAT on the states front, besides local levies, cesses and surcharges. It will say to bring about a more transparent and equal form of taxation.

It is not sure as of now, when exactly the GST will become operational.

As per Mitra, the GST was not tabled in Parliament during the ongoing session since there was no consensus on it. This session will come to a close on August 31.

He said that the government had hoped that an agreement regarding the GST could be reached, but that doesn't seem to be happening.

Many Opposition-ruled states are against the implementation of GST.
