General elections to be held from April 8 to May 15: ECLondon, Jan. 28 : The Election Commissioner of India, S Y Quraishi, has said that the next general elections will be held between April 8 and May 15 this year.

"We, in the Election Commission, have not yet discussed the final dates, but it will be held between April 8 and May 15," Quraishi announced after delivering a lecture on `Jammu and Kashmir Elections 2008'''', at the India House here on Wednesday.

The Indian High Commissioner to the UK, Shiv Shankar Mukherjee was also present on the occasion.

Speaking on the problems faced by the Election Commission in holding the recent JandK Assembly elections, Quraishi said the Election Commission has the highest credibility.

He also said that India was the only country in the world to introduce the Electronic Voting Machines on such a large scale, as the system, so far, has ensured that the secrecy of vote is not compromised.

A general election in India is the largest electoral exercise in the world involving 671 million voters. (ANI)
