Farhan Akhtar appointed as first-ever male UN Women Goodwill Ambassador

Farhan Akhtar UN WomenNew Delhi, Nov 14 : Farhan Akhtar has been appointed as the first ever male Goodwill Ambassador by UN Women, it has been revealed.

The 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' star known for his work as an actor, filmmaker and singer, will devote his efforts to promoting the empowerment of women and girls across South Asia.

The 40-year-old actor, who is running his own campaign against gender inequality named MARD, thanked UN for this honor.

He said, "Firstly I would just like to say thank you to everyone at the UN for this wonderful honor today. It really has been something that I have been focusing on for the last two and a half years and I feel this has really broaden the horizon and encourage me further down this path."

In addition, Akhtar will also serve as an advocate for UN Women's newly launched HeForShe campaign - an initiative aimed at placing men at the centre of activism and dialogue to end persistent inequalities faced by women and girls around the world. (ANI)
