Dogs Found Feeding On ‘Foetuses’ Thrown In Hospital Vat

Dogs Found Feeding On ‘Foetuses’ Thrown In Hospital VatTwo aborted foetuses, which had been nibbled on, were found on the roadway outside the Sambhunath Pandit Hospital on Elgin Road, around mid-day on Wednesday.

Residents who reported the whole matter to the hospital stated that there was no reply from the functionaries.

Claiming inactiveness and slackness on part of the hospital functionaries, the south Kolkata district Congress and south Kolkata district Seva Dal held a protest in the administrative building and gheraoed Superintendent Dr. T K Manna for 60 minutes.

Manna was permitted to go only after the police came.

The furious gang tried to heckle Manna at the time he was being escorted out. The police force had to turn to a lathicharge to take the situation in hand.

“The foetuses were spotted by the members of our party and locals around 12.30 pm,” said Asim Bose, secretary, south Kolkata District Congress.

“Since the hospital super was not available, we informed the police. Around 4 pm, a foetus was still to be removed.”

A functionary of Bhawanipore police stated, “We were informed around 4.30 pm by the hospital authorities. We found a mutilated foetus and handed it over to them.”

As per prelim investigation, two fetuses covered in a bag were dumped in a storage bin in the hospital.

Street dogs dragged the fetuses outside and had begun feeding on them.

Supratim Sarkar, DC, South, said, “The issue has been brought to my notice. We are looking into the matter.”

Manna said, “I inquired if there was any delivery of stillborn babies, but none had occurred in our hospital. I asked the emergency medical officer to look into the matter. One foetus was found which we have kept for autopsy.”

He has formed a 3-member group for an investigation. “The committee will submit its report in three days,” he said.
