Dairy farmers in five countries to strike

Milk farmersParis  - Milk farmers in France, Germany, Luxembourg, Switzerland and Austria will go on strike later Thursday to press their demands for higher prices and a cut in milk production quotas, the online edition of the daily Le Figaro reported.

The strike would cut off delivery to dairies and creameries, with the milk being given instead to charitable organizations.

The farmers in the five countries represent about 70 per cent of European milk production.

Milk farmers fiercely oppose the European Commission's plan to end the milk quota system in 2015, claiming that it would lead to a drastic fall in prices.(dpa)
