Oviedo, Spain - British broadcaster and naturalist David Attenborough, 83, was Thursday awarded Spain's highly respected Prince of Asturias Prize in the category of social sciences.

Attenborough's work as an investigator and media professional "is considered one of the great contributions to the defence of life and conservation of the planet," the jury said.

The Prince of Asturias Prize, which is worth 50,000 euros (71,000 dollars), is awarded annually in eight categories. It is presented by Crown Prince Felipe in an autumn ceremony.(dpa)
