Al-Qaeda-linked group claims rocket attack on Israel
Beirut - A previously unknown group, with reported links to al-Qaeda, has claimed responsibility for last week's rocket attacks on Israel from southern Lebanon, Lebanese radio reports said Monday.
The Brigades of Abdullah Azzam, Battalion of Ziad Jarrah, made the claim in a statement published on the website Al-Fajr Media Centre, which has close ties to the al-Qaeda terrorist network, according to the reports.
The group said the rocket attack came in response to the "continued hostilities" by Israel toward Palestinians and Muslims.
Abdullah Azzam, usually described as an al-Qaeda mentor, was killed in a bomb blast in 1989.
Ziad Jarrah was the Lebanese pilot who carried out the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States that killed nearly 3,000 people. Jarrah died when the hijacked United Airlines plane crashed in Pennsylvania.
At least two Katyusha rockets were fired from the Lebanese village of Al-Qlalieh near the southern port city of Tyre towards northern Israeli.
Israel fire 13 retaliatory shells into the area where the rocket were launched.
No casualties were reported on either side.
Israel has lodged a complaint with the United Nations over the attack and said it holds the Lebanese government responsible for rocket attacks. (dpa)
